CHAPTER 17
âWe should be getting those drugs out now, Bob,â Dave said loudly. He was pacing the sandy beach, running his fingers through his hair, agitated.
âSon, we need to leave the drugs where they are.â Even though Bobâs voice was low, he was not to be argued with. âThe best thing is to cover them back up. Look at what weâve got. Two bodies and now a packet load of drugs. Use your noggin for once, Dave! With the drugs included, this isnât about just a washed-up body on the beach.â
Bob had shot footage of the bricks of what they were assuming was heroin, wrapped in black plastic and buried deep in the sand, as soon as heâd reached the spot where Dave had been digging. âWe donât know the size of what weâre dealing with here. Could be bigger than Ben Hur and, if thatâs the case, we need time. Right now, the most important thing is to get the body back and secured. Iâll get on the blower once weâve done that. Ring the locals and see what they can do to give us a hand.â He spread his hands and gestured around. âWhat we do have going for us at the moment is the gift of time. No one is coming in or going out of this station because of the rain and river being high. Whoever is meant to be collecting these drugs isnât going to be able to get in either.â
âWhat if theyâre already here? We should seize it, Bob.â
âNo, son. We are not going to do that. If theyâre here, weâll find them. And weâll try to keep an eye on the drugs if we can. Now, this is a murder scene and thatâs what we need to focus on. Let sleeping dogs lie for the moment, all right?â He stopped and put his hand on Daveâs shoulder. âDonât you think this girl deserves our best? Fuck the drugs, they can wait. Come on, letâs get this poor girl up to the coolroom.â
Dave glanced around wildly. Leaving the drugs in the ground and not at least cataloguing what was there went against everything heâd been taught during his detective training, but he had to admit what Bob said made sense.
The law of the land was different out here. In the city they could have called in another team to take charge of the haul. Out here, it was just the two of them and they had to make do the best they could. Prioritise.
And the body of the girl ⦠Bob was certainly right there. If it had been his daughter lying there in a body bag, heâd want the copper who was investigating her death to do everything he could for her.
Finally, he nodded. Bob was already using his foot to push the sand back into the hole. Dave waited for a moment then started to help. The two men were silent as they finished covering the drugs back up and then returned to the troopy.
